To introduce non-stop 'Duronto' trains
The Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee presented the 15th Railway Budget in Parliament today, 3 July 2009. This is her first rail budget for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and third in her political career.
The Railway Minister announced 12 new point to point, non-stop 'Duronto' trains, 57 new train services, extension of 27 trains and increase in frequency of 13 trains. The Minister also proposed introduction of Air-conditioned double decker coaches for inter-city travel.
She also announced cut in tatkal bookings charges from Rs 150 to Rs 100. The Tatkal fares will be a fixed percentage of Railways.
