Rail Minister instructs to provide regional, national cuisines on trains

Emphasis on good quality food, drinking water etc

The Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, presenting the rail budget for 2009-10 in parliament today, 3 July 2009, said all railway zones have been instructed to ensure availability of 'Janata Khana' - national and regional cuisines - on trains.

National and regional cuisines will be introduced and priority would be given to provision of good quality food, drinking water and toilet facilities and ensure cleanliness on trains and stations, Mamata Banerjee said in her 65-minute rail budget speech 2009-10.

She added that the railways would develop a comprehensive policy, including strict monitoring mechanisms, to ensure that these decisions are being implemented.

Mamata Banerjee today, 3 July 2009, presented her first rail budget for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and third in her political career.
