Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee presented the 15th Railway Budget in Parliament today, 3 July 2009. This is her first rail budget for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and third in her political career.
In her Budget speech, Mamata Banarjee announced a slew of measures including introduction of Girl child scholarship for Group B employees, increasing women commandos in key routes, Mobile ticketing vans, ramps and special bogeys for physically challenged passengers along with automatic ticket vending machines on major stations, availability of doctors on long-distance trains, availability of tickers from 5,000 post offices, SMS updates for wait-listed passengers, cold storages for farmers to store vegetables and fruits, infotainment facilities on Rajdhani Express for long distance passengers among others
