NAV of MFs gain in the week ended 13 November 2009

Returns of IT funds jumped 5.47% 

Mutual funds gained as major equity benchmark indices surged in the week ended 13 November 2009. Returns of IT funds, banking funds, Index Funds, ELSS Funds and Equity diversified funds advanced in the week ended 13 November 2009. All major categories have posted positive returns over the week.

Sensex gained 690.55 points or 4.27% to 16,848.83 and the S&P CNX Nifty rose 202.8 points or 4.22%, to 4998.95 in the week ended 13 November 2009. MFs' net selling of equities stood at Rs 165.80 crore while net buying of debt securities of Rs 3846.40 crore in the week ended 13 November 2009 (the data is available till 12 November 2009).


Equity diversified funds 

Equity-diversified funds' category average rose 3.22% underperforming the Sensex that gained 4.27% in the week ended 13 November 2009. Returns of HSBC Small Cap Fund grew the most that posted returns of 6.91%. JM Core 11 Fund - Series I, Tata Indo-Global Infrastructure Fund, and Sahara R.E.A.L Fund posted returns of 6.79%, 6.43%, and 6.22%, respectively. NAV of Sundaram BNP Paribas Entertain Opportunities and Religare AGILE Fund increased by 5.91% and 5.31%, respectively. No equity diversified fund fell in the week ended 13 November 2009.


ELSS Funds 

NAVs of the ELSS funds category grew 3.45% in the week ended 13 November 2009. NAV of SBI Tax Advantage Fund - Series I and JM Tax Gain Fund have increased by 6.22% and 5.06%, respectively. Returns of Religare AGILE Tax Fund grew 4.90%. IDFC Tax Saver (ELSS) scaled up by 4.43%. While no ELSS fund posted negative returns over the week.


Index Funds 

All 21 index funds posted positive returns over the week. NAVs of the index funds' category scaled up 4.11% underperforming both the Sensex and the Nifty in the week ended 13 November 2009. Among the Index funds, HDFC Index Fund-Sensex Plan has topped among others by posting returns of 4.30%. The returns of ICICI Pru Index Fund-Nifty Plan grew 4.27%. Returns of UTI-Master Index Fund and HDFC Index Fund-Sensex Plus Plan have increased by 4.25% and 4.24%, respectively.


Pharma Funds 

The average returns of pharma funds gained 1.69% underperforming the BSE Healthcare index that rose 2.19% for week ended 13 November 2009. All 4 pharma funds posted positive returns in the week. Returns of UTI-Pharma & Healthcare Fund and SBI Magnum SFU - Pharma Fund grew 1.80% and 1.71%, respectively. Reliance Pharma Fund posted positive returns of 1.67%.


FMCG Funds 

FMCG funds advanced by 1.72% outperforming the BSE FMCG Index that surged 1.70% over the week ended 13 November 2009. ICICI Pru FMCG Fund increased by 2.32%. Returns of SBI Magnum SFU - FMCG Fund gained 1.64%. Return of Franklin FMCG Fund rose 1.19%.


Mid Cap funds 

The Net asset value of the Mid Cap fund category scaled up 3.08% outperforming BSE MidCap that grew 2.63% while underperforming the CNX MidCap that rose 3.82%, respectively in the week ended 13 November 2009. Returns of DSP BR Micro-Cap Fund increased by 7.18%. NAV of SBI Magnum Midcap Fund rose 4.25%. HDFC Capital Builder and JM Mid Cap Fund posted returns of 3.80% and 3.66%, respectively. All 26 mid cap funds have posted positive returns over the week ended 13 November 2009.



Banking funds 

All seven banking funds posted positive returns over the week. The net asset value of the banking funds grew 4.27% returns underperforming BSE Bankex that increased by 5.28%. JM Financial Services Sector Fund topped by giving returns of 5.28%. UTI-Banking Sector Fund gained 4.91%. NAV Religare Banking Fund grew 4.53%. Returns of ICICI Pru Banking & Financial Services surged 4.05%.


IT funds 

NAV of six IT funds moved up by 5.47% underperforming the BSE Infotech index which gained 6.53% and the CNX IT that increased by 6.14%. SBI Magnum SFU - Infotech Fund increased by 7.21%. Franklin Infotech Fund and DSP BR Technology.com recorded positive returns of 5.88% and 5.41%, respectively. Returns of ICICI Pru Technology Fund went up by 4.48% over the week ended 13 November 2009.


Gold ETFs 

Gold prices have surged both the international and domestic markets in the week ended 13 November 2009. Thus, gold ETFs gained over the week. The price of gold has increased by nearly 0.66% and 0.57%, respectively in domestic (Mumbai) and international (London) markets in the week. The category average of GETFs increased by 0.42% in the week ended 13 November 2009. All five Gold ETFs posted positive returns over the week. Returns of UTI-Gold Exchange Traded Fund, Quantum Gold Fund, Gold BeES and Reliance Gold Exchange Traded Fund surged 0.42% each.



Arbitrage funds 

There was no change in category average of NAV of all arbitrage funds in the week ended 13 November 2009. JPMorgan India Alpha Fund and ICICI Pru Blended - Plan B posted returns of 0.25% and 0.04%, respectively. JM Arbitrage Advantage Fund and Kotak Equity Arbitrage Fund have recorded returns of 0.04% and 0.03%, respectively. Net asset value of Benchmark Derivative Fund, UTI-SPrEAD Fund and ICICI Pru Equity & Deriv -Income Optimis remained unchanged over the week ended 13 November 2009. NAV of 9 funds fell in the week. ICICI Pru Blended - Plan A and IDFC Arbitrage Plus - Plan A plunged 0.09% and 0.06%, respectively.


Balanced Funds 

Net asset value of the balanced funds moved up 1.68% in the week ended 13 November 2009 underperforming the Sensex. Among the balanced funds, Tata SIP Fund - Scheme II, Tata SIP Fund - Scheme I, Kotak Dynamic Asset Allocation enhanced by 6.24%, 6.16%, and 6.12%, respectively. HDFC Children's Gift Fund-Invt Plan grew 3.48%. Only one fund out of 77 balanced funds gave negative returns over week ended 13 November 2009. Returns of Kotak Wealth Builder - Series I fell 0.32%.


Gilt Funds 

NAVs of the gilt fund category scaled up 0.13% in the week ended 13 November 2009. This rise was mostly contributed due to marginal rise in price of Gsecs over the week, in which gilt funds invest heavily. Edelweiss Gilt Fund and LICMF G-Sec Fund - PF Plan posted positive returns of 1.28% and 0.46%, respectively. NAV of LICMF G-Sec Fund rose 0.46%. Returns of DWS Gilt Fund and Mirae Asset Gilt Fund - Invest increased by 0.34% and 0.30%, respectively. Returns of 2 out of 64 gilt funds declined over week ended 13 November 2009. ICICI Pru Gilt Fund - Invest - PF Option and DSP BR G-Sec Fund have tumbled 0.15% and 0.01%, respectively over the week


Income Funds 

The category average of income funds rose slightly 0.34% in the week ended 13 November 2009. NAV of ICICI Pru S.M.A.R.T. Fund - Sr.G - 36Mths gained 6.69% and ICICI Pru S.M.A.R.T. Fund - Sr.F - 36Mths increased by 3.21%. Returns of UTI-CCP Advantage Fund grew 3.19%. Returns of ICICI Pru S.M.A.R.T. Fund - Sr.H - 36Mths, ICICI Pru S.M.A.R.T. Fund - Sr.D - 24Mths increased by 2.91% and 1.32%, respectively. Returns of 7 out of 92 funds slipped over a week ended 13 November 2009. Birla Sun Life Income Fund and Birla Sun Life Income Fund 54EB fell 0.05% and 0.05%, respectively.
