Support was also coming from a slightly firmer euro against the dollar, although European stock markets were little changed. The higher opening of the US stock futures also supported oil.
U.S. stock futures edged higher Wednesday, with the Federal Reserve in the spotlight ahead of two speeches from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke as well as the central bank's anecdotal report on the economy.
Turning up from early losses, S&P 500 futures rose 3.2 points to 1,062.40 and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 5.75 points to 1,797.20. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 22 points.
WTI light sweet oil futures for July contract is trading up 83 cents at $ 72.82 per barrel. Market is waiting for the U.S. Department of Energy statistics at 1430 GMT.
MCX June oil futures jumped to as high as Rs 3442 per barrel. It was last seen trading up nearly Rs 60. Next resistance can be expected near Rs 3490 levels.
